The Big Table

“Beauty is the mystery of life.”

“The absolute magic in life is to find rest.”

I encountered these two phrases recently whilst reading a book, and they naturally sit within the imagination of Better Story because they speak to two deep human longings: the longing to be awakened, and the longing to belong.

Beauty as Mystery

When we say “beauty is the mystery of life,” we are not talking simply about aesthetics or decoration. We are talking about those moments that interrupt us — a shared meal, unexpected kindness, music, laughter, honesty, silence, bread being broken around a table. This is the Big Table - Beauty is what reminds us that life is more than survival.

Beauty slows us.

Beauty opens us.

Beauty makes us attentive again.

At the Big Table, beauty is not found in perfection. It is found in presence. The Big Table becomes beautiful because people are seen there. Stories are heard there. Strangers become neighbours there.  We sit, eating together, listening to stories from the streets of Wigan.

The Big Table is about creating a culture of collaboration. Yes, it is an event where people from various sectors will be gathered, eating, laughing, storytelling, visualising a better story together, but more than anything, it is a collaboration of hope and transformation.

Jesus constantly noticed beauty where others missed it: children, bread, seeds, birds, wounded people, overlooked people, ordinary tabless.

Beauty becomes a doorway into mystery:

•           mystery that we are loved

•           mystery that grace keeps appearing

•           mystery that community can heal us

•           mystery that God is still with us

Rest as Resistance

“The absolute magic in life is to find rest.”

This saying feels prophetic in a culture addicted to noise, speed, productivity, and anxiety.

Rest is difficult because modern life trains us to live fragmented lives:

•           mentally distracted

•           emotionally overextended

•           spiritually disconnected

•           socially isolated

Better Story offers a counter-rhythm.

The Big Table itself becomes a practice of rest.

Not passive rest.

Not escapism.

But restorative presence.

To sit at a table with others is to declare:

•           I do not have to earn my place here.

•           I can slow down.

•           I can listen.

•           I can receive.

•           I can become human again.

This echoes the invitation of Jesus:

“Come to me, all you who are weary…”

Rest in the Better Story framework is deeply communal. We find rest not only alone, but together.

The Big Table becomes almost sacramental:

•           Food becomes hospitality

•           Conversation becomes healing

•           Listening becomes dignity

•           Lingering becomes resistance

In this sense, rest is not inactivity; it is trust.

Bringing the Two Together

Beauty awakens us.

Rest restores us.

Better Story is not trying to build a large platform or simply host events. It is trying to cultivate spaces where people can rediscover:

•           Wonder

•           Peace

•           Belonging

•           Attention

•           Communion

The world tells us life is a competition.

Better Story whispers that life may actually be a table.

And perhaps the deepest mystery is this:

That when people gather with honesty, simplicity, and welcome, beauty appears — and for a moment, people find rest. This is the Big Table.
